Dragons Boast Plenty Of Talent

With several returners back from last year's squad and a solid group of talented newcomers, the Lake Placid boys tennis team looks primed for a strong season.

"We have a nice blend of experienced players and some new guys that have a lot of ability," said veteran Green Dragon coach Dennis Berard. "We have a lot of guys that play at about the same level and that gives us a lot of depth throughout the roster."

At No. 1 is senior Martin Oseguera, who is in his fourth year of varsity tennis.

"Martin has learned to control his game," said Berard. "He's finally figured out that you don't have to hit the ball hard every shot.

"His serves and backhand are much improved, he's experienced and he should be competitive in every match he plays."

At No. 2 singles is senior Andrew Olivares, who is also in his fourth year of varsity action.

"Andrew is another player that has learned to harness his game," said the Green Dragon coach. "He sees the court well and has good placement on his shots.

"He played some at number one singles for us last year and that kind of experience should pay off for us this year."

Junior Michael Sweet is at No. 3 for the Green Dragons and has really improved his game.

"Michael has worked hard on every aspect of his game and his forehand and backhand have really improved," said Berard. "His court savvy is much better and he has learned a lot by playing against Martin and Andy."

At No. 4 is junior exchange student Andreas Berg, who has surprised Berard with his consistent play.

"Andreas is from Germany and has really been a great addition to the team," said the Green Dragon coach. "He is a smart player and his ability at the fourth spot should score a lot of points for us."

Senior Michael Trujillo is at No. 5 and has three years of varsity experience.

"Michael has to learn to be patient and under control," said Berard. "He has the ability, he just needs to stay focused and keep working on his game."

Freshman Jacob Underwood, Vinnie McNamee and senior Evan Chaput round out the squad and have the ability to push the players in front of them.

"This is the best depth we've had in years," said Berard. "We don't have to depend on just one or two players like we have in the past and that makes us a much stronger team."

The Green Dragons are in Class 1A-District 9 with Avon Park, Hardee, Sebring and powerhouses Braden River, Palmetto and Sarasota Booker.

"We're in a tough district," said Berard. "But with our talent and depth we'll be able to compete with most any team in the district.

Lake Placid opened the season with a home match on Tuesday against LaBelle.
