Sebring Swings To Big Win Over Moore Haven

Freshman Haley Pack and Sebring coach Joe Sinness looked at each other with anxious smiles on Friday, as the Blue Streak softball team prepared to take the field for its home opener against Moore Haven.

The first-year coach was about to send a freshman to the circle, and as first pitch approached, both were feeling a bit apprehensive as the crowd began to gather around the fences.

"Her comment before the game was 'I'm actually nervous, I can feel it in the pit of my stomach,'" Sinness said. "I think it had been a while since she'd been nervous to pitch. Shoot, I was probably way more nervous than her."

Pack struck out six over five innings and hit a two-RBI single on Friday to lead the Sebring softball team to a 12-1 victory over Moore Haven in the Blue Streaks' home opener.

"She pitched a heck of a game," Sinness said. "She kept it down and the defense played well behind her."

Priscilla Adams had two RBI and catcher Wendy Negrin had an RBI double to lead Sebring (3-0), which took advantage of six Terrier errors and 10 walks.

"We only had three hits because their pitchers were all over," said Sinness, who noted the Streaks pulled off 11 steals.

Sebring is back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the Streaks host Frostproof.

SOFTBALL: Lake Placid 8, Immokalee 7

LAKE PLACID - Kylie Weber was 4-for-5 and Katie Dascher scored the game-winner on Friday as the Lake Placid softball team put up two runs in the final inning to grab an 8-7 victory over Immokalee in the Green Dragons' home opener.

LP was down two in the seventh after a back-and-forth game when Cristina Wells walked and worked her way around the bases, eventually scoring on a groundout by Ashley Wells. Weber then laid down the bunt that scored Dascher, and the Dragons celebrated a home win.

"I'm really excited because we haven't won our first home game in such a long time," said LP coach Marilyn Jones.

"My girls looked like they really wanted to play hard, and it was wonderful to see."

The Green Dragons are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they travel to face Avon Park.

SOFTBALL: Avon Park 32, Booker 2

AVON PARK - Avon Park made sure its first win of the season was one to remember as the Red Devils trounced Booker 32-2 in five innings in girls softball district action on Friday night.

Ashley Carr picked the Class 4A-District 10 win as Avon Park improved to 1-1 on the season.

"It's nice to get that first win of the season," said Red Devil first-year coach Wade Jackson.

Jamice Perry and Brearnna Tate led the Red Devils with three hits and Amanda Kendall added two hits in the romp over the Tornadoes.

Avon Park is back on the diamond on Tuesday when the Red Devils host Lake Placid at 7:30 p.m.
