The Sebring boys basketball team will host the eight-team Taveniere Tournament, which starts at 3 p.m. today in the Blue Streaks gym.
Sebring, which hasn't played since Dec. 17, will take on Lake Gibson tonight at 7 p.m. If the Blue Streaks win, they will play the winner of Hardee-Coral Gables, which tips off today at 4:30. The tournament runs through Wednesday night.
The eight teams in the tournament: Ridge, Parkway, Okeechobee, Lakeland, Coral Gables, Hardee, Lake Gibson and host Sebring.
And today's matchups: Ridge-Parkway at 3 p.m.; Coral Gables-Hardee at 4:30; Okeechobee-Lakeland at 6; and Lake Gibson-Sebring at 7.
Led by Marcus Dewberry, Devin Clarke and Joe Young, the Blue Streaks (2-5) have struggled this season while adapting to a new classification and district. They possess a significant size advantage inside - with Jewel Campbell at 6-foot-8, with a wingspan exceeding 7 feet - but they have committed too many turnovers, particularly in transition.
Dewberry, only a freshman, scored a game-high 23 points in the Blue Streaks' 78-67 loss to Avon Park.
"We've just got to keep on playing," Sebring coach Princeton Harris said. "We're turning a corner, and I don't want to peak early. They're on the rise, though."
