Some of the very best high school senior football players in the Sunshine State get a final chance to sparkle in tonight's Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Football Classic at Firemen's Field.
The annual FACA North-South All-Star Football Classic, which has been around for many years, has seen the likes of Deion Sanders, Anquan Boldin, Derrick Brooks, Clinton Portis and Andre Johnson cap their high school careers in the star-studded game.
The North won last year's contest by a score of 34-7, but the South squad is looking to bounce back with a solid effort in tonight's affair.
Sebring's Tevin Toney, who is on the South team, is the only local player to be selected to compete in the prestigious contest.
The players and coaches arrived in Sebring on Saturday and have been well-taken care of and entertained in their time in the Heartland.
"This is one of the oldest high school all-star football games in the state," said event coordinator Matt Gose. "These are the top seniors in the state and this game is always exciting to watch because of the speed and talent level of all the players.
"We were able to host this game for the first time last year and we're making sure the players and coaches have a great experience while they're here."
Toney, who had a monster year playing on the line for Sebring, will get one final chance to play in front of his family and friends and a final opportunity to impress the many college football coaches that will be on hand.
"It's been quite a while since we had a player selected to play in this event," said Gose. "It's a big deal and it will be good to see a local player compete in this great game."
The North squad is led by North Florida Christian quarterback Clinton Trickell, while the South team features Class 5A state champion Tampa Plant linebacker Jon Vega and linebacker Mike Mirabella.
The FACA North-South Football All-Star Classic kicks off at 6:30 tonight at Firemen's Field and the cost of admission is $10 per person.
