American Legion golf a hit

A cold front blew into the Heartland late Friday night, but that didn't keep the determined golfers from hitting the links early Saturday morning in support of the American Legion Post 74 golf tournament.

The one-day, 18-hole event used a four-person scramble format and the 77 players competed over the newly renovated Sebring Golf Club layout on a very breezy day.

When all of the birdies and eagles were added up, the talented foursome of Mike Browning, Dale Bradley, Brian Valentine and Barry Tupper finished first in the First Flight with a sizzling 16-under-par 56.

Placing second in the First Flight with a fine 59 was the resourceful quartet of Sandy Foster, Steve Swan, Pete Coughlin and Charlie Little, while the foursome of Red Shaw, Kevin Cleghorn, Joe Garrison and Wayne Goodlett finished third with a score of 60.

The Second Flight was won by the talented group of Dick Menk, Denny Lee, Steve Gregg and Terry Otting with a 9-under-par 63, after a match of cards with the foursome of Harry Marsh, Joseph Dionne, Mike Basile and Denis Shanks.

Third place in the Second Flight went to the quartet of JP Plunkett, Rich Philpott, Jesse Spray and Frank Allen with a 66, after a match of cards with the talented team of Jimmy Goins, Jane Goins, Mike Traegde and Ken Danielson.

Charlie Little won the closest-to-the-pin contest on hole No. 16.
