It may have been a non-district game, but the Sebring girls basketball team played with a lot of enthusiasm and intensity in rolling to a 56-21 win over Frostproof on Thursday night in the Blue Streaks gym.
Sebring forward Shannon Williams scored a team-high 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Blue Streaks improved to 7-5 overall.
"This was a good game for us and we set some goals that we wanted to work on," said Sebring coach Mike Lee. "We came out with a lot of energy, jumped out to a big lead and never really let up.
"I was glad to see the girls keep their intensity up even with a big lead because we have a certain level that we need to play at regardless of what the score is."
Sebring, which shot 40 percent from the floor and 60 percent from behind the 3-point arc, came out hot as Madison Rose drained a pair of 3-pointers and Jerica Moore added one of her own to help the Blue Streaks take a commanding 23-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
"We executed our offense and worked to hit the open player," said Lee. "Madison and Jerica give us a pair of good perimeter shooters and that opens up the inside for Shannon.
"That makes us more balanced and harder to defend on offense and that's a good thing."
Sebring kept the pressure on Frostproof, which committed 17 turnovers in the non-district loss, as Emmanice McCullors used her quickness to drive to the basket and scored six of her team-high 10 points as the Blue Streaks took a dominating 38-16 lead into the half.
Sebring extended its lead as Williams dominated the paint against the smaller Bulldogs and scored six points on layups and rebound baskets to help the Blue Streaks open up a 54-18 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Sebring, which substituted liberally throughout the one-sided contest, stayed in a zone the final period and Frostproof's Shalontay Rose scored six of her team-high 10 points to give the Bulldogs a glimmer of hope for the future.
Class 5A Sebring is off until after the Christmas break when the Blue Streaks get back into the meat of their District 5 schedule.
"We're very competitive in our district because only Winter Haven and Lake Wales blew us out and we didn't have Emmanice for the game against Lake Wales," Lee said. "Our goal is to keep working hard to improve ."
