Hawks cruise past Panthers

South Florida's Tom Sicking went 4-for-5 with two RBI, but it wasn't enough as Hillsborough hung on for an 11-8 win in Suncoast Conference baseball action on Saturday.

SFCC rallied from five runs down to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Hawks took advantage of a walk and several hits to come-from-behind to take the conference win.

The loss dropped South Florida to 27-23 overall and 8-16 in conference play with one game remaining in the regular season.

The Panthers, who have been plagued by injuries to their pitching staff, were eliminated from any chance for postseason play.

"We really couldn't stop any team's offense the last few weeks," said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "When you cannot control or maintain momentum because you have trouble throwing strikes or just plain getting people out, it's hard to win.

"The loss ended any postseason aspirations we had, but we just didn't do enough over the last few weeks to earn a spot in the playoffs."

South Florida warps up its season with a home game tonight against Hillsborough at Panther Field.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
