Polk hands SFCC baseball fourth straight loss

Polk Community College took advantage of a beleaguered South Florida Community College pitching staff to post an 11-1 victory in a Suncoast Conference game on Monday night.

The Panthers, whose pitching staff has been plagued by injuries, dropped their fourth game in a row to fall to 27-20 overall and 8-13.

"Facts are facts, we have not been able to overcome our injuries on the mound," said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "Our best players are not making plays on offense or defense, and our issues on the mound don't make for a very good recipe for winning games."

The top four teams in the conference qualify for postseason play and the Panthers are in fifth place with only four conference games remaining in the regular season.

South Florida is at conference champion Manatee today and the Panthers are home against Manatee on Friday.

"Every game is important down the stretch," Hitt said. "Manatee is a good club and we're going to have our work cut out for us.

"We've picked a bad time to go into a slump, but we've got to keep playing hard and see what happens."
