Wayne and Kim Hilker traveled all the way down from New Jersey to get a few swings in.

And when the scores were tabulated following Saturday's Highlands County Humane Society golf tournament, the Hilkers, along with teammates Richard Byrum and Syl Kreuser, took first place in the step-aside scramble with a score of 63.

"The Hilkers read about the tournament on the Internet and came down," said Golf Hammock director of golf Roger Giegerich. "I don't think they were ringers, because they won by one stroke."

The team of Pat Dell, Lars Bylund, AJ Balding and Bill Segert took second place with a 64 on the windy and cool morning tourney, which raised funds for the Humane Society of Highlands County.

Bill Shaffer won the closest to the pin contest, which was set up on hole No. 7, while Joe Hamilton took the closest to the line competition, which was held on hole No. 10.

The tournament, which attracted 40 players, was followed by a silent auction, which also benefitted the Humane Society.
