SARASOTA -- Beonca Godfrey scored a team-high 15 points and hit a key free throw down the stretch to lead Avon Park to a 49-44 win over the DeSoto Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 4A-District 10 tournament on Tuesday.

Godfrey ignited the Red Devil offense with her slashing style of play, scoring six points in the third to lift Avon Park to a commanding 30-17 lead midway through the quarter.

Freshman point guard Markida Hawthorne distributed the ball well and finished the game with 11 points, while junior Daija Barrett chipped in nine points, as the Red Devils move on to the semifinals on Friday against an opponent to be determined.
