Red Devils Rush Past Green Dragons
AVON PARK - Four Red Devils scored in double figures on Thursday night as the Avon Park boys basketball team used a balanced attack and a strong second half to pull away from Lake Placid 69-47 in non-district action.
Virgil Cooper scored 13 points, Xavier Caldwell scored 12 points, Cleveland Nobles scored 11 and Avierre Conner scored 10 to pace AP. Derrick McKenzie and Alonzo Robertson added eight points each.
"It was all about execution," said Red Devil coach Luther Clemons. "They came out slow, but we had a really good second half."
Avon Park worked a two-point first-half lead into a 48-37 lead after three. They continued their scoring spree with a 21-10 fourth quarter to bring the game its final margin.
"We can still be a little up and down," Clemons said. "But we're getting there."
Conlin Veley led the Green Dragons with 20 points - including 15 in the first half - while Andre Wilson and Kemanji Ellington added six points a piece.
The Red Devils closed out their district schedule on Friday night at Palmetto, while the Green Dragons hosted LaBelle. LP faces three Class 4A teams next week: They're at DeSoto on Tuesday and host Sebring on Thursday and Avon Park on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Hardee 37, Lake Placid 24
WAUCHULA - Kaneisha Hamilton had 14 points, but it wasn't enough on Thursday as the Hardee girls basketball team rolled past Lake Placid 37-24.
"They have some height, but we came out sloppy," said LP coach Shonda Legree.
The Dragons were at LaBelle on Friday in their final tune-up before districts.
"Mental and physical toughness has been our problem all season," Legree said. "We need to get a lot more physical than we have been, and when we make mistakes, we need to learn to forget about it and not dwell on them."
