LAKE PLACID - "This is the way you want to end your career," said Lake Placid girls soccer head coach Liz Sottile after hearing the news of her latest coaching milestone.
After leading the Green Dragons to the Class 3A-District 8 runner-up trophy - the first trophy for LP girls soccer under her tutelage - Sottile was named District 8 Coach of the Year by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association.
"It's really good to be recognized for doing things the right way," Sottile said. "This has been a great run for me and I've loved my days coaching this team. I'm going to really miss it."
Lake Placid's Erica Resendiz was also named District 8 Player of the Year for leading the Green Dragons in scoring and to the brink of a district title.
The Green Dragons went 6-7-2 on the year under Sottile, who shaped a very young team into one that displayed heart and pride every time they stepped onto the field to represent Lake Placid. Their season ended with a runner-up trophy and their first-ever appearance in the regional semifinals, where they eventually lost 5-0 to state runner-up Lake Highland Prep.
Before the district tournament, Sottile announced that she was stepping down as girls head soccer coach after five seasons.
