SEBRING -- The second year of the Players Club Golf Tour is at hand and the first tournament of the season is set for March 15 at Sebring Golf Club.
The brainchild of former Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg (who left the Heartland in December to take a job as Director of Golf at Chula Vista Golf Resort in the Dells, Wis.) the Players Club Tour will be run by River Greens golf course professional Jason Beatty.
"Tom started these events to give the local players a chance to compete in individual tournaments on Saturdays over the course of the year," Beatty said. "I'm looking forward to the first tournament, and I hope a lot of the local golfers take advantage of this opportunity."
A $75 membership fee is required to play in the tournaments.
That one-time fee entitles each golfer to a $15 gift certificate to the River Greens pro shop, special rates on golf lessons and the opportunity to purchase a special priced limited membership to River Greens.
Each of the tournaments are on Saturdays so that working people have a chance to compete.
There will be men's, women's and senior divisions, and handicaps will be used.
The first tournament tees off at 9 a.m. on March 15 at Sebring Golf Club and the next event is set for April 26 at River Greens.
Points will be awarded after each tournament and the season runs through December.
Champions will be crowned at an end-of-the-year awards banquet and you do not have to participate in each tournament to win.
"We're going to have 11 events and we'll take the top six scores, so if you miss a few events it won't hurt you," said Beatty. "These tournaments fill a void in the area because there are plenty of four-person scramble events, but nothing for individuals to compete in.
"I hope we have a good turnout and look forward to the season."
