Pasco Rolls Past Sebring
AVON PARK - The Streaks played well on Friday against a tough Pasco squad, but in the end the Bulldogs put up the big inning needed to beat the Sebring baseball team 6-0 during the AP First Pitch Classic at Head Field.
"We just couldn't generate any offense tonight," said SHS head coach Hoppy Rewis. "We gave a lot better effort and had a much better presence on the field."
Adam Simmons started the game for the Streaks, giving up a run in the first inning before settling down and throwing with confidence.
Sebring returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Monday, when they meet Lake Region at the Bill Jarrett Early Bird Tourney at Head Field.
SOFTBALL: George Jenkins 7, Avon Park 1
LAKELAND - Head coach Mike Cobb watched his Avon Park softball team - which had scored 57 runs in its first four games - plate just one run while suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of George Jenkins on Friday.
"I think this educated our team on what a good pitcher really is," Cobb said. "Errors and our bats going cold told the story tonight."
Down 7-0 in the seventh, the Red Devils loaded the bases but were able to bring one runner home.
Heather Barnes went 2 for 3 and pitcher Ashton Shirey, who pitched a complete game, drove in Barnes for the Red Devils' lone run.
"Ashton was not on her game tonight," Cobb said. "She didn't do a bad job, but her pitches were flat."
The Red Devils return to action at 7 p.m. Monday when they host Lake Region.
NOTE: The Sebring/Booker softball game that was scheduled for Friday was canceled. The Streaks next play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Frostproof.
