With as many as 47 girls out for the Sebring girls weightlifting team, first-year Blue Streak coach Steve Berry has more than enough talent to work with.
"It's been hard to get organized since we started practicing a week and then we had to take a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday," said Berry. "We've been practicing hard and we're going to see how many girls are really serious about the sport.
"We've got some experienced girls back from last year's squad and that gives us a solid group to build around."
Senior Samantha Spiegel brings ability and experience in the 119-pound weight class for the Blue Streaks.
"Samantha is strong for her size," Berry said. "She had a good year last year and is really focused on improving this year."
Senior Michelle Bash, who was selected to the Highlands Today All-Heartland Girls Weightlifting team last year, is even stronger this year and will compete in the 154 or 159-pound weight class.
"Michelle is probably our strongest girl and is really motivated to do well this season," said the Blue Streak coach.
Alana Gordon is a senior who should be a force in the 139-pound class after just missing qualifying for sectionals last year.
"Alana has a good work ethic and really wants to improve after missing out last year," Berry said.
Junior Karly Freeland is a force in the 129-pound division for the Blue Streaks.
"Karly had some success last year and is primed for a big year," said Berry. "She is always working to get stronger and is very coachable."
Anastasia Crawford is a sophomore that has a lot of potential in the unlimited division, while sophomore Louisa Sierra has the strength to be a force in the 199-pound weight class.
"Anastasia and Louisa have looked good in practice," said Berry. "We've got a nice blend of youth and experience on the team and I think we've got a lot of talent to work with.
"We've got a good group out for the team and the older girls have gone out of their way to help the less experienced girls with their techniques and how to do things the right way."
Sebring hosted its first meet of the season against Hardee and Avon Park on Thursday.
"The girls have a great attitude and are excited about the first meet," said Berry. "It will be good to see how we perform under pressure."
