Sebring Boys Battle Elements In Golf Opener

The Sebring High School boys golf team hit the road for its first match of the season on Monday, and Mother Nature hit back.

The Blue Streaks competed in the third annual East Lake Invitational at Wentworth Golf Club, which featured 20 of the top teams in the state.

Originally slated for 18 holes, the one-day tournament was shortened to nine holes because of rain.

Sebring managed to finish sixth with a +20 for its team score.

"The conditions were pretty bad," said first-year Blue Streak golf coach Vince Liles. "It was very wet and the kids were allowed to lift, clean and place their ball."

John Vicker Jr. led the way for Sebring with a +3, Sean Garner was +4, Brett Drummond came in at +6 and Blake Liles was at +7 after a topsy-turvy round saw him card three birdies and two triple-bogies.

"If we could've eliminated a few bad holes, we could've been in the top three pretty easily," coach Liles said, noting Garner and Vicker were impressive in the tough conditions. "We're in a really strong tournament this weekend, and I think we can make a run at the top three."

The Blue Streaks are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wekiva Golf Club in Longwood for the Lake Brantley Invitational.
