AVON PARK 0, FROSTPROOF 35
FROSTPROOF - Senior tailback Carlton Thomas of Frostproof put on a clinic at the expense of the Avon Park Red Devils, scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 219 yards, as the Bulldogs won 35-0 in front of an electric crowd at Faris Brannen Stadium on Friday.
Thomas scored on his second carry of the night - an 86-yard dash through the heart of the Red Devil defense - yet the Bulldogs (4-1) held only a slim 7-0 lead at the half against a game Avon Park team, whose head coach, Earnest Perkins, was honored as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach of the Week on Thursday after leading the Red Devils to a stunning 10-7 upset of Class 3A-District 12 champion Hardee Wildcats last week.
Avon Park (1-3) had a good game plan coming into the contest against Frostproof - get the ball into the hands of their playmakers. Junior quarterback Virgil Cooper and tailback Teddy Allen danced and dashed their way deep into Bulldog territory on Avon Park's first possession, but like so many times before, were denied entry into the end zone.
The Red Devils' two scoring chances in enemy territory resulted in a turnover on downs and an interception in the first half and Thomas's 55-yard touchdown run to open the second half doused any hopes of a comeback.
Allen and Alvin Hinson were carried off the field with various injuries and their status is up in the air for next Friday's homecoming game against Braden River.
