Red Devils Hope To Take Next Step

AVON PARK -- Kelly Bass just can't serve without taking a short walk.

An service-line stroll, to be exact.

"I've heard I take eight steps," said Bass, who picked up the unusual serving technique while playing on a smaller club-volleyball court. "I'm used to it, and now, I feel like if I don't take those eight steps, it won't go over."

Bass won't be the only Red Devil volleyball player looking to take a few extra steps tonight: Avon Park opens its postseason at 6 p.m. against Palmetto at Sebring High School in a match-up of Class 4A-District 10's fourth and fifth seeds.

The winner of the match, however, won't be breathing any sighs of relief: They'll face defending district champion DeSoto on Wednesday at 7:30.

AP coach Christy Hipps said her team showed some of its best teamwork and communication in a three-set victory last week over Lake Placid. If they hope to make any sort of noise in the playoffs, she said, they'll need to continue that trend.

"We need to hustle after every ball," Hipps said. "When you're hustling and communicating, it makes the difference in the end.

"We need to keep moving our feet and be ready when that ball comes back over the net."
