Hamilton Leads LP Over Walker Memorial

LAKE PLACID - Run and gun, and then run some more.
Lake Placid used the speed of junior point guard Kaneisha Hamilton, who scored a game-high 15 points, to lead the Green Dragons past Walker Memorial 41-32 in a non-district girls basketball meeting on Thursday night.

The win evened Lake Placid's record at 1-1, and with three players scoring eight points apiece, the Dragon's new offense had its desired effect.

"We had balanced scoring and that's what I want to see," said sixth-year Lake Placid coach Shonda Legree.

The Dragons came out on fire early in the contest with Hamilton scoring eight points and center Shardesia Sholtz adding four of her eight points for a 12-2 lead heading into the second period. Sierra Weaver, who finished with eight points and five rebounds, scored four points in the quarter as LP took a 16-6 halftime lead.

"We ran our offense real well in the first half and did a lot of things right," said Legree. "But we got too comfortable in the third quarter and let Walker get back in the game."

The Eagles, who dropped to 1-1, stormed back behind a suffocating full-court press, which forced several Dragon turnovers, and Blair Waltz's steal and layup gave Walker its first lead at 21-20.
Lake Placid bounced back to take a 27-24 lead into the final eight minutes.

"We lost our focus in the third quarter, but I told the girls to get back to what we were doing in the first half," Legree said.

Hamilton led the way with a basket to open the final period, as the Dragons went on an 8-1 run to seal the victory.

"It's good to win, but we have to learn to play hard every quarter," Legree said. "We just need to keep focused on our game and we'll be fine."
