With perfect weather to play in and a marvelous meal after the round, the Heartland Couples Golf League got off to a rousing start on Saturday afternoon at River Greens Golf Course.
The 18-hole, two-person scramble format attracted a field of 14 teams, and the talented duo of Jim and Toni Brooks won the Gross Division with an even par 72, after a match of cards with Don and Sue Hall.
Ken and June Maloney finished third with a 1 over 73.
In the Net Division, Gary and Patti Wedge won with a 57, while Keith and Pat Kincer placed second with a 62, after a match of cards with Charles and Kay Hardin.
Charles Hardin had the shot of the day after making a hole-in-one on the 125-yard, par 3 third hole.
The Heartland Couples Golf League, which is the brainchild of River Green's professional Jason Beatty, is designed for couples who enjoy playing golf together, and the entry fee into each month's tournament includes 18 holes of golf and a sumptuous dinner after the round.
"There are a lot of leagues for men and women in the area, Beatty said. "But I thought we would start a league that would give couples a chance to play together and enjoy a great meal afterwards.
"It was a great day on Saturday with perfect weather and everyone really enjoyed the southern cooking after they finished playing.
"We hope the word gets out and more couples sign up for next month's tournament."
The Heartland Couples Golf League has one event each month and runs through April.
Points are awarded for each tournament and the top three scores count toward the final standings.
"Everyone has different schedules and if you can't play in some of the events that's all right," Beatty said.
The next event is slated for Dec. 8 at Placid Lakes Country Club.
"We want everyone to have a good time," Beatty said. "I think this league fills a void in the area."
