Lake Placid Clobbers Clewiston

CLEWISTON - Ali Lopez and Erica Resendiz scored two goals each to lead Lake Placid past Clewiston 4-0 in girls soccer on Thursday night.

"It was a fantastic match," said Green Dragon coach Liz Sottile. "I moved some players around and we passed the ball well and played excellent defense."

The non-district win improved Lake Placid to 4-3-4.

"I'm really excited about the rest of the season," Sottile said. "Because we finally played to our potential."

BOYS BASKETBALL Haines City 70, Avon Park 57

AUBURNDALE - Avon Park played well on its way to building a seven-point halftime lead, but 30 turnovers were too much to overcome as Haines City beat the Red Devils 70-57 on Thursday in the first round of the T-Mac basketball tournament.

"We shot 40 percent in the first half because we worked the ball inside," said Avon Park first-year coach Luther Clemons. "But we shot only 20 percent in the second half and made way to many turnovers.

"We never got into any kind of a flow on offense in the second half."

Okeechobee 60, Lake Placid 49

OKEECHOBEE - Josh Hickey scored 15 points and Conlin Veley added 11, but it wasn't enough as Okeechobee beat Lake Placid 60-49 in boys basketball on Thursday night.

The Green Dragons trailed by only two points at the half, but Okeechobee went on a 16-8 run in the third quarter to take control of the non-district game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Avon Park 36, Lake Wales 29

LAKE WALES - Beonca Godfrey scored a game-high 14 points to lead Avon Park past Lake Wales 36-29 in girls basketball on Thursday night.

The non-district win improved the Red Devils to 13-4 overall.

"It was good to win, but we played down to our competition," said Avon Park coach Paulette Daly. "We need to play with more intensity and desire no matter who the opponent is."
