LAKELAND - The Avon Park wrestling team had an impressive showing at the Polk County Duals this past weekend.
Dressing just nine wrestlers on Friday and eight on Saturday out of the 14 weight classes, the Red Devils wrestled well with several standouts during the weekend tourney.
Junior Kermosi Hatten (171) and sophomore James Bland (160) both went 8-0 over the two-day event, while Isuel Guzman (215) and Jace Grimmett (heavyweight) posted 7-1 records.
Red Devil coach Lee Elder was pleased with his team, which won 73 percent of their matches while going 3-5 as a team for the tournament.
"In a dual meet tournament, it is difficult to win a lot of duals without a full lineup, but the kids we did have wrestled well and kept us in each and every match," Elder said. "Hopefully over the holidays, our kids will heal up from injuries and we'll have a stronger team in the second half of the year."
After their first home meet against Frostproof on Tuesday, the Red Devils will be off the holidays and return to the mat on Jan. 5 when they participate in the Spiegel Tournament in Sebring.
