SEBRING -- When it comes to donating time and money for a good cause, the folks in the Heartland always rise to the occasion.
That was the case with Saturday's 16th annual Brad Doty Memorial Children's' Golf Classic at Sebring Golf Club.
The one-day, 18-hole, four-person scramble event attracted a field of 106 golfers, and the talented foursome of Alan Price, Floyd Osborne, Gary Williams and Ennis Caldwell finished first in the Championship Flight after shooting a 20-under-par score of 52, which included a team handicap.
The awesome team of Pat Dell, Lars Bylund, AJ Balding and Mike Lamp also shot 20-under, but lost the match of cards to place second.
The tournament raised more than $14,000, and the proceeds will go to buy Christmas gifts for needy children and families in Highlands County.
"We're real pleased with the turnout for the tournament," said event organizer Kip Doty. "We really appreciate the support from the community through the years.
"No matter how tough times are, the community always finds it in their hearts to support this event and we can't thank everyone enough."
Jacques Trombley, Matt Moye, Kip Goolsby and Andrew Katsanis finished third with a 55.
The First Flight was won by the team of Bill Boyd, Mark Barnhurst, Ashley Martin and Joe Clark with a 57, while Troy Doty, Greg Ninghert, Jeff Vineberg and Jonathon Vineberg placed second with a 58.
Dr. Kye Pahk, Dr. Gonzalez, Ron McPherson and Kim Schlosser came in third place with a 59.
The Second Flight was won by the foursome of John Danko, Theresa Danko, Tim McKenna and Tony Plyley with a 63, after a match of cards with the team of Dick Baker, Mel Steelman, Paul Repa and Don Darroh who finished second.
Mike Conway, Jim McCartney, Jeff McCartney and Rick Thompson came in third with a 66.
Lisa Doty won long drive honors on hole No. 4, while Mary Jane Burrows won the long drive contest on hole No. 12.
Kip Goolsby won the longest putt contest on hole No. 6, while John Danko won on hole No. 15.
Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Eric Zwayer on hole No. 3, Dan McCoomb on hole No. 5, Paul Repa
on hole No. 11 and Scott Baker on hole No. 16.
"It was a great tournament and just when you think it can't get any better, the people of Highlands County step up and give more," Doty said. "The gifts and food that we distribute mean so much to the people and none of this would be possible without the generosity of the community."
