Downtown Sebring goes to the dogs

The hottest days of the summer are commonly known as the dog days of summer. On Friday in downtown Sebring, that phrase meant something entirely different.

The first of many Destination Downtown Sebring events — "The Dog Days of Summer" — drew a huge number of Highlands County's four-legged friends for a variety of events, booths and all-around family fun. There was a Dog Fashion Show Parade, and many dogs in attendance were dressed for the occasion. There also was live music. The event was emceed by Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell.

Dogs nearly outnumbered the humans in attendance. There were family pets as well as service animals and some that were available for adoption by the Humane Society.

The event excited the children as much as the dogs.

Jamesa Blackstock, a soon-to-be third-grader from Avon Park, laughed as she talked about how fun it was to be around the dogs.

Dana McPherson, owner of Dog Designs by Dana, had a booth and shared stories with fellow pet owners. Saunders Veterinary Clinic had a booth, as did the Humane Society.

A number of downtown businesses, including Brenner Pottery and Still Chic Consignment Boutique, offered dog treats and water for the pets in attendance, as well as snacks for owners that traveled into their shops. Many of the businesses that participated in the event also offered great discounts for their services and products.

Tami Boss, of Still Chic Consignment Boutique, is a member of the subcommittee that planned the event. Destination Downtown Sebring, formerly known as the Gallery Walk, hopes to draw crowds consistently. Events are planned for the future, as well, in hopes of continuing to draw large crowds.

"It gives people something different to do," Boss said. She admits that she knows many local residents that don't consider spending time in the downtown area. "It's so beautiful here."

Lara Todd, of Brenner Pottery, is another member. She explains that the purpose of the event is a direct reflection of the name.

"Destination Downtown Sebring seeks to make downtown a destination for residents," Todd said.

"The businesses also get some help," Boss added, which is good for the local economy.
