Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission pulled out the body of an Avon Park man from the bottom of Lake Adelaide Sunday, after he drowned about 50 feet from shore.
Enedino Sanchez, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene, several hours after he slipped below the surface. His body was recovered in about 8 feet of water.
The Highlands County Sheriff's Office dispatch received the 911 call at about 5:37 p.m. Sunday.
Sheriff's Lt. Darin Hood said Tuesday that a preliminary autopsy at the District 10 Medical Examiner's placed the cause of death as drowning.
"A toxicology analysis is being conducted," said Hood. "There is an indication of alcohol being a contributing factor."
Hood said the man was there with two other people, and that he jumped from the boat for a swim.
The two others tried to recover him and called 911, Hood said. There were others on shore who witnessed the tragedy.
There was no indication the man had been struck by the boat.
Lake Adelaide is located north of Avon Park across U.S. 27 from the old Cargill orange processing plant.
