Motorists who generally travel State Road 70 had to find an alternate form of travel Monday morning, as fog and smoke from heavy fires in the area combined to create dangerous driving conditions.
The affected area was three miles west of U.S. 27 to two miles east of the DeSoto-Highlands county line, according to the Florida Highway Patrol's Fort Myers office.
Linda Higbee, with the FHP office in Fort Myers, said the smoke was coming from controlled burns in the area.
"Department of Forestry was well aware of it," she said.
By 10:30 a.m., the road was opened back up for traffic. Higbee said they didn't get any reports of traffic problems related to the road closure.
"These things started pretty early," she said.
