The medians on U.S. 27 north of Lake Placid are going to become greener this spring.
Crepe myrtle and saw palmetto will be planted in a stretch from Heartland Boulevard north to Lakeview Road.
Highlands County is administering a $150,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation for the landscaping project. Bids will be opened Feb. 4, according to the county's purchasing department.
Ron Cauthan, senior project manager for Chastain-Skillman Inc., said it will take 30 days to get the contract in place for the project. Work could begin in March and is expected to take 90 days.
The project includes removal of sod from the median in areas designated for planting, construction of a well, pump and irrigation system. It also includes maintenance of the landscaping for 12 months after the project is accepted.
