Kassie Canevari never thought she'd win the Highlands County Jr. Miss contest on Friday night. When did she know?
"When they said my name," said Kassie, even though she's a former Jr. Miss Lake Placid.
"That's true," said her mother, Jennifer Canevari. "She had a date to go to the movies. Now, she's going to be here."
The Jr. Miss attends the Saturday night Miss Highlands contest, so she had to break that date.
Julie Kirsch was the first runner-up, Rebecca Luepschen, finished third; Simone Waldron was fourth, and Stephanie Halliday rounded out the top five.
Simone was also chosen Miss Photogenic, and the 21 candidates picked Gina Haley as Miss Congeniality.
Kassie, who is the freshman class president, is also on the volleyball and weightlifting teams. She raises money for the Miracle League of Highlands County, and plans to be a flight nurse and Miss Florida.
"She's an outstanding girl," said her mother. "She has accomplished about anything she ever set her mind to."
