In just a few days, the sounds of revved up lawn mowers and high spirited racers will speed down Avon Park Mowerplex's track.
Florida Lawnracing Association's fourth race of the season will take place on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
Racers will be competing for trophies and bragging rights, said Charles Butcher, president of Florida Lawnracing Association.
The race features seven classes of lawnmower races that range from junior mowers to factory experimental. Some modified mowers can reach up to 55 mph down the speedway.
"These guys are running 40 to 50 mph out there. You're going to see a lot of excitement with those guys," Butcher said.
Avon Park's Mowerplex has been home to the lawn mower race since 2002.
Lawn racing originally started in England and was brought to the U.S. in the 1970s, Butcher said. Since then, it has evolved from push racing to the standard riding mowers.
Admission to the event is $5 for spectators, and those interested in the behind-the-scenes of lawnmower racing can buy a $10 pit pass that allows them to talk to drivers and see how the machines work.
The race starts at 6 p.m. and gates open at 5 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to get a good spot and bring a lawn chair.
