Prison education
I am writing this in regards to a Jan. 8 cartoon caption in the Highlands Today that really is so far from the truth; it said "And this is where all the money, that would otherwise go to higher education is locked up!"
As a proud citizen of Highlands County, I love our county more than anyone and appreciate its warm hearted feeling. I also have been recently released from the Florida Department of Corrections after serving 18 years, 6 days, in a state prison system that offers educational services and very little vocational. All state prisons are very understaffed and underpaid. The inmates have lost their rights to use computers, most if not all of the prison libraries are outdated and prisoners do menial jobs which have no benefits of their re-entrance to society.
Excuse me but this state bragged about the lottery monies used for education; where is it? Every year we pay our teachers less; every day we see politician's pockets getting fatter. Please don't abuse us, Highlands Today, letting our folks think that their tax dollars are used on the prison industry. The Florida state prisons are mere warehouses; we need to focus on a way to educate, not incarcerate.
