Cracker Trail Elementary School is getting a $2,491.51 mini-grant to help promote good nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle changes among students and school staff.
The goal is to reduce obesity and improve discipline and academic performance as evidenced by improved height/weight ratios, decreased discipline referrals and improved Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores.
"I feel that the healthier our students are, the better they'll do at school and in life as a whole," principal Rick Demeri said.
The school's physical education teacher, Aaron Lewis, and Debra J. Caruso, Healthy Start Division director with the Highlands County Health Department and the Community Health Improvement Planning Council, sought funding of this grant awarded by The Heartland for Children Foundation.
