Investigators have identified the man killed over two weeks ago after being hit by a car while crossing U.S. 27.
Vicente Gutierrez Ortiz, 37, had no identification on him when the accident originally happened. That led law enforcement to reach out to members of the Hispanic community for help.
"His friends came in to report him missing," said Avon Park Police Chief Matt Doughney.
It was learned Ortiz was from Tenancingo, Mexico, and had come to the area with another person, according to Doughney. His family members have been notified about the accident.
The victim's fingerprints were run and no other names came up, according to Doughney. There was one other item that helped authorities in learning Ortiz's name.
"He had a key in his pocket that unlocked the room he was staying in," Doughney said.
On Jan. 25, just after 7:30 p.m., Ortiz was struck by a car driven by a Frostproof lady, the chief previously said.
The woman did not flee the scene and has not been charged in connection with the accident at this time.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
