Police say a man remains in critical condition after being dragged approximately 370 feet by a pickup truck along East Royal Palm Street.
Larry Brian Hendrix, 19, was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital for injuries he suffered in the accident, according to Lake Placid Police Lt. James Fansler. Calls to get a patient condition update were not returned before press time Monday.
A second man, David Lee Caudill, 31, was also flown to Lee Memorial for injuries after being struck by the truck. A press release stated he was listed in stable condition.
The incident happened between 3 and 3:25 a.m. Sunday at a home in the area of Spruce and East Royal Palm streets, Fansler said.
Christopher Sullivan, 20, was getting ready to leave the party when someone reached into his vehicle and tried to take some snacks and other things he had just bought, according to Fansler.
The lieutenant added that Sullivan was leaving the area when someone threw a brick at his window.
"He got scared, left the area (and) ended up returning with one of the victims (Caudill) for retaliation," Fansler said.
When the two returned, a large group began fighting in the street, according to the press release.
Sullivan told police he got scared and tried to drive away, at which time he hit the two victims with his truck, Fansler said.
At this point, investigators are not sure whether Caudill was actually dragged by the truck, but he did have "extensive" injuries, according to Fansler.
Sullivan was arrested Sunday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries, a misdemeanor. He remained in the Highlands County Jail Monday under a $10,000 bond.
The case remains under investigation.
"We're still kind of piecing things together," said Chief Phil Williams.
