The Avon Park Police Department is stepping up efforts to stop a rash of robberies where the victims have been assaulted by a group of three or four younger black males.
Sunday night around 7:30, four robbers - dressed in dark clothing - attacked two victims in a field behind Ridgedale Apartments, according to Chief Matt Doughney. The men's wallets were taken, with one of them containing $50 and an undetermined amount in the other.
Last Tuesday, a group of three attacked an Avon Park man as he walked home from a convenience store near the corner of Memorial Drive and East Main Street.
The victim was bashed in the back of the head and lost consciousness briefly, Cmdr. Mike Rowan said previously.
His wallet, which contained his ID and debit card, was taken.
Doughney said officers working at night will now make consensual contact with people seen traveling in packs of three or four. They will make notes of who they are and what they are wearing.
In the previous robberies, no arrests were made and no suspects have been identified, according to Doughney.
"One time is an isolated incident," he said. "Two starts a pattern."
