Several people were injured, including one critically, in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning north of Avon Park.

According to Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Paul Miller, a pickup truck was traveling north on U.S. 27 when it lost control and veered left through the median and crashed into a Ford minivan that was heading south on 27. The accident happened between Lake Byrd Boulevard and Stratford Road.

Miller said it was raining at the time of the accident and the road was wet.

What caused the pickup to lose control is still under investigation, Miller said.

One person who was riding in the van was in critical condition at Florida Hospital Heartland Division, Miller said late Sunday morning.

A 3-year-old boy in the van was also taken to Florida Hospital and then transferred to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Miller said.

Another passenger in the van was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center and then went to Tampa General Hospital, according to Miller.
