A Sebring woman was arrested Sunday on charges of not giving a horse decent food for 30 days, leading to it being put down.
Kristen Rae Browning, 28, of 6830 Sparta Road, was charged with causing cruel death, pain and suffering to an animal, a third-degree felony.
She was released from the Highlands County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
Highlands County Animal Control responded to the home Sunday after getting a call about the neglected horse, according to the arrest report.
The horse was reportedly found lying on its side and unable to stand. Its hip bone, ribs and legs bones were all said to be showing.
"The horse appeared to be starving and malnourished," the report stated. "I (arresting sheriff's Dep. Dustin McGee) observed no feed or hay present in the pasture in which the horse was confined in."
A veterinarian examined the animal and concluded it had not had any decent feed in approximately 30 days and was suffering from malnourishment.
The decision was made to euthanize the animal so it would not suffer any further, the report stated.
Browning told authorities she had fed the animal twice a day and approximately six weeks ago had bought a round bale of hay.
She added that when she left on Friday, she saw a partial of the hay bale still there on the ground, according to the report.
