Highlands County teachers plan to rally to "veto" Senate Bill 6 at three major street corners today.
The bill, which includes a provision tying teacher pay in part to student performance, has passed the Senate and House and now goes before Gov. Charlie Crist. After initially supporting the bill, Crist has indicated he may veto it.
"We've been getting a lot of response," said Sebring and Lake Placid area organizer, Sebring High teacher Kaerdi McGovern. "This is a majorly important piece of legislation."
Teachers plan on gathering from 4-6 p.m., today, at the corners of U.S. 27 and the Sebring Parkway in Sebring, at U.S. 27 and Main Street in Avon Park and U.S. 27 and Interlake Boulevard in Lake Placid.
Park Elementary teacher Carla Rice said she couldn't estimate how many teachers or people will get involved in the rally.
"It's just a very last-moment, grassroots type thing," she said. "To be honest, a lot of teachers are afraid - afraid of retaliation."
They will be making signs for the rally, Rice said. Along with red paint from a friend, "'we should be wearing red because we are seeing red over what they are doing to teachers."
It seems like people are upset about the bill and are being motivated to turn out, said Highlands County Teachers Union President Steve Picklesimer.
