I love watching old time movies, especially WWII vintage war movies. TMC, my favorite old movie channel, showed "Guns of Navarone" last week. In a conversation, Gregory Peck, the main character, said something to the effect, "You have to fight like your enemy to win a war."
Isn't that what's bringing the wrath of the apologists down on the CIA in their attempt to win the war against terrorism? It always seems as if we play by different rules than the bad guys.
Even though we abhor the concept of torture, I'll bet there are a lot of American GIs who, when they were prisoners of war, wished that their punishment only consisted of a severe case of sleep deprivation. It's too bad that we don't have cell phone photos of their treatment.
Thanks but no thanks
I don't recall hiring Preston Colby to be my watcher-over of all things county oriented. So why is he spending so much of my money?
All too often people who say they are looking out for my best interests are really just following their own personal agenda.
Be aware
I recently got an e-mail from a reader that had this Gerald Ford quote included in it: "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have." Right now we are being "given" cash-for-clunkers, stimulus checks and soon medical treatment.
What price are we going to have to eventually pay for all these gifts?
After all, as Thomas Jefferson said, "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
And although he didn't have Obamacare in mind, Jefferson advised, "Delay is preferable to error." Why are we hurrying to get the health care bill enacted before there are assurances made to the people that it is the right one?
Suspicious?
It seems a bit suspicious to me when I walk into a restaurant and find a table full of carryout boxes like I found over at the Lakeview - behind the Kenilworth Hotel. Then I ordered a dinner and discovered the reason for the boxes: It takes a bigger eater than I am to finish a meal that is served there.
"Would you hand me one of those boxes please?"
Icy footing
Is it my imagination or is the tone of e-mails on politics changing? It seems like I'm getting a lot more notes that are critical of the type of "change" coming out of Washington.
How many are ten?
Did you ever notice when these www.letssueeverybody.com law firms advertise, the spokesperson is standing in front of a bunch of law books? What if God handed down just half of the laws in those books? Moses would have needed all of the Israelites to help him bring them down from Mt. Sinai.
How times have changed. One of the commandments delivered to Moses was, "Honor thy father and thy mother." Today do children even know which two persons they should honor? Maybe that's why we have so many books.
Overheard
Overheard at the checkout counter: Is summer over already? If we lived up north it would be time to oil the snow blower.
