I didn't care much for the Senator's politics, but in all fairness, my eulogy of him would sound something like this:

"Ted was a compassionate alcoholic and risk-taker whose dogged persistence as a dedicated and socially liberal Democrat was able to hold the mighty Reagan administration at bay on several occasions; a few of those times, singlehandedly.

Was he a model citizen? No. Was he a good American? Without a doubt yes. I think that says a lot about the man without pointing out the obvious mistakes made in his personal and private life.
