A Sebring woman was arrested Monday on a warrant alleging she took tens of thousands of dollars from an elderly woman's accounts while acting as her power of attorney.
Glynda Anne Jones, 45, of 1485 Carrington Ave., Sebring, was charged with exploitation of the elderly. She was released Monday night on a $25,000 bond.
Jones and the victim, who is in her 80s and lives alone, had been friends for several years. As the senior became unable to tend to her everyday needs, she started relying on friends more and more to help her, according to the arrest report.
On Dec. 6, 2006, the victim reportedly arranged, through her attorney, to give Jones a comprehensive power of attorney.
The complaint came some time later, when Jones allegedly started using money from the victim's accounts for her own purposes.
"(The victim) is a vulnerable adult due to advanced age and some dementia," the report stated. "Glynda (Jones) ... power of attorney, has not been able to be reached regarding non-payment of (the victim's) bill where she resides. There have been numerous attempts to contact Glynda, but it has been unsuccessful. Glynda has used over $1,000 from (the victim's) account for her own purposes, or at least not for (the victim's) care."
Bank records allegedly show that Jones paid herself approximately $62,700 in multiple transactions from the victim's bank accounts.
An additional $60,077.20 was paid out on behalf of Jones, "to her own or others' benefit," the report stated. These expenses had a start date of March 5, 2007.
Sebring Police Officer Kimberly Wise was listed as the arresting officer and Officer Sean Bueford was listed as the reporting officer.
