Students plant hydroponic garden

Fred Wild Elementary students set up a hydroponic garden at their school Friday with the help of Mike McCracken of McCracken Farms.

The hydroponic system shows students how to create a garden that conserves water, conserves nutrients and grows a lot of plants in a little area, McCracken said.

"We are always trying to promote using less water."

Technically, hydroponic meant strictly planting in a water solution, but it has developed to encompass more about how you are growing a plant or crop, McCracken said.

The students planted strawberry plants in 10 hydroponic stacking systems. Each stacking systems holds 20 plants.
