Approximately 90 residents were safely evacuated after a bomb threat was called in to the Royal Care of Avon Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center just before 4 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office were busy searching the building late in the afternoon. Nothing had been found around 5:30 p.m., but there was no confirmation that the threat was nothing more than a hoax.
Per protocol, radios and cell phones cannot be used during a bomb threat by emergency personnel or others who are near the building the threat is coming from.
The threat disrupted a scheduled Harvest Moon Ball that was being held for the residents, according to Royal Care staff. The event was scheduled for 4 p.m., with dinner and music provide by a disc jockey.
