Concerned citizens and Major Shirley Johnson, of Avon Park's Correctional Institution, are hosting a Veterans Day event at Southside Veterans Garden, also known as the "old triangle," in Avon Park.
"We're hoping that the community will come out and pay homage with us. This is a very important day for the security and safety of all of us in the United States," Johnson said.
Speakers will give special tribute to veterans between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served.
Johnson will open the ceremony followed by local speakers: Carol Hamilton, wife of a deceased veteran, Commander Sgt. Maj. Louis Nance, from the U.S. Army Reserves, Gerald Snell, Southside CRA chairman and Deputy Mayor of Avon Park Brenda Gray will close the tribute.
