The Highlands County Health Department has received enough 2009 H1N1 Vaccine to hold vaccination clinics for students at the local schools.
The Highlands County School Board and the health department are working together to have vaccines available at different school locations at no cost and on a voluntary basis.
Students will have to bring a parent or legal guardian to complete the consent form. Those who can sign the consent form are: father, mother, adult aunt, adult brother, adult sister, adult uncle, grandfather, grandmother, stepmother, stepfather or court ordered legal guardian.
The vaccine will be offered in both forms - nasal mist and shot.
In an effort to offer the vaccine to the five high-risk groups, the health department will also schedule additional clinics that will be made available as soon as they know the date, time and location.
The health department reminds everyone how to limit the spread of this virus. Wash your hands frequently, stay home from work or school if you feel ill, and cover your mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing.
These common sense precautions will greatly reduce the risk of transmission of all flu virus whether seasonal or 2009 H1N1, according to a press release. If someone experiences flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever of 100 degrees or higher, and sore throat, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, they should contact their physician or health care provider and discuss whether to be seen in the office, emergency department, or stay home.
