While at SFCC the other day, picking up my wife after class, I found myself in a student lounge area reading the student paper "Panther Purr," with S. Carl, editor.
On the front page there is a question posed for the student body for a vote: "Do you think the U.S. should have free health care, Yes or No?"
Well, the answer of course is a resounding yes!
Unfortunately, the problem is that there is no such thing as free health care, at least not until doctors and nurses become an all-volunteer force and hospitals no longer charge for services rendered.
A more appropriate question should be: "Should the U.S. have taxpayer supported, government administered health care?"
This is the system where everyone, legal or illegal, from hang nail to heart attack, line up for free care. Soon, the government man is faced with a choice; raise taxes to increase health care resources or triage the patient load (read: rationing).
So, students, you get to vote. But I say, if you liked Medicare fraud, the Social Security scam and the way the government has handled the swine flu panic, you'll love Obama care.
But even if you disagree with this simplified explanation, we can at least agree that there is no free lunch.
