Upon reading your editorial of Monday, May 19 on civility in the appointing of Supreme Court Justices, one question came to my mind. Did you also encourage civility when Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas, John Roberts and Samuel Alito were nominated for the Supreme Court? If you did not, why not and if you did not, why then are you advocating it now?

Editor's note: Those justices deserved the same civility, as do any nominations regardless of the president at the time.
