LP Cameras

The proposed Lake Placid ordinance to place cameras to catch infractions at red light intersections in town is ill advised, or as Councilman Bastardi was quoted as saying, "It looks to me like a solution looking for a problem" The cameras would take several pictures of the car's license plate, location vs. the red light, etc.

The contractor would install the equipment, process the infraction and mail the tickets. He would also get an as yet unknown percentage of the take. The balance would go into the town coffers. The fee as proposed would be $100 or possibly $150, as has been suggested. If the proposed ordinance is indeed a safety issue, what are the accident statistics to justify the act?

Mr. Bastardi indicated he has not seen any data to support the claim of a safety issue. Enough of this hypocrisy, it is a money making scheme. Safety is a smoke screen. In this low wage county a fine of $100 or $150 would be a serious problem for many people. How many truckers, tourists, etc., would be able to come back to appeal a ticket they get in the mail, weeks after they passed through town? This proposed ordinance is unworthy of and would label Lake Placid not as a great place to live and visit but as a hostile place to be avoided.
