Relay For Life

On March 14, Beta Sigma Phi (Xi nu Sigma) sorority sponsored and put on the Relay for Life Survivor Luncheon in Avon Park. We would like to thank all of the following people who helped and supported us in making the luncheon a success. This was the first time the sorority has been in charge of the Survivor Luncheon. We hope all of you that came out enjoyed it.

Special thanks go to these community supporters: Avon Park Breakfast Rotary Club. Stanley Steemer, Robert Strenth, Andy Tuck, Mark Palmer Electric, Management Experts Inc., (Renee Bennett and William Bennett,) Florida Hospital, Olympic Restaurant, Avon Park Police Department, Avon Park High School, Avon Park Correction Inst. Heartland National Bank, Tom Lund Insurance of Sebring and Ridge Florist of Avon Park.

Regretfully the turnout by the community was less than expected and hoped for by those who worked so hard. We needed more teams as well as general public joining in the activities of the event to make this the best Relay for Life we have had. Food and games were readily available and enjoyed. All of the money these teams made went to the Highlands County Cancer Society. Most people if not all, have friends as well as family members who have been diagnosed with this terrible disease. At some time they will need help with treatment and-or expenses as well as anything else they might need. They have our Highlands County Cancer Society there for them. Sadly Sebring and Lake Placid surpassed Avon Park in participating and giving.

I hope everyone will consider doing more next year. We really need more support from our community raising money for and awareness of cancer. Those who do form teams work very hard and work very long hours. I would like to see more people come out and fill that track. We really need more teams down there, so please start planning now for next year.
