Apparently, St. Petersburg has had enough with the lawn watering scofflaws.
Instituting the $175 fine for each watering violation will hopefully encourage residents, who place green lawns above the need to save water, to comply.
In the town of Lake Placid, Leisure Lakes and other local areas, all one has to do is drive around early in the morning, or cruise around Lake June toward Lake June Point and Placid Lakes, and it becomes evident that there are a lot of people who just don't care or believe they are above the rules that are intended to get us through the current situation.
Some residents living on the lakes and canals, who draw their irrigation water from that source, also need to be put on notice that they need to turn off those pumps.
I have turned off my irrigation system and will wait for the rains to return and encourage others to do the same.
Now is the time for the officials in Highlands County and the town of Lake Placid to put similar fines in place to curb this misuse of resources and to increase them with each additional citation.
