One mobile home caught fire, and it burned the roof off a second house before firefighters could control the blaze.
The fire started before 8 a.m. Saturday, said DeSoto City Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ben DeBree. No one was at home at the time.
The mailboxes in front identified one home as belonging to Jim and Chloe Haynes. DeBree said it caught fire first, after the owners left for breakfast. The name on the second mailbox was Zuber, owned by a woman who didn't come to Florida this year because she was sick, DeBree said.
Firefighters removed the lamps, furniture and personal items from her home, which would be stored by DeSoto Mobile Home Park until she can claim them. Nothing was salvageable from the Haynes' home.
DeBree said investigators think something in the center of the Haynes home started the fire, but they couldn't determine exactly what.
"There's nothing left to tell what was there," DeBree said.
No one was injured.
